About the Artwork
© AllPosters.com
Artist and outdoorsman A.Y. Jackson revealed the hidden wonders of Canada’s delicate foliage and rolling rapids in “Red Maple.” Painted in 1914 in Jackson’s studio, the landscape depicts the Oxtongue River in Algonquin Park. It typifies Jackson’s (1882 – 1974) work as part of the Group of Seven, artists who defied the assumption that Canada’s wilderness was too rugged and untamed to be painted. Symbolizing Canada’s natural beauty, this piece reflected emerging nationalist sentiments kindled by the outbreak of World War I several months before it was created.
