In Scott Mutter’s “The Escalator,” a tiny businessman wades in to the surf towards a giant escalator in the artist’s “Surrational” photographic style in which two or more negatives fuse to create one new reality. A photographer for 30 years, Mutter has no formal artistic training, studying history and the Chinese language before pursuing a career in photography. Mutter’s style of blending two incongruent images is strongly influenced by that of pioneering filmmaker Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein.
